A Collection of Monochrome Images

Photography, for me, is not just about the image, not even just a way of seeing the world. It is also about the process of capturing the essence, the “thisness” of a subject on film and presenting that image in a physical rather than electronic form, that others can hold, share and, hopefully, enjoy. I see photography as a craft as much as an art form.

To this end, I choose to use film cameras and I continue to strive to master the huge variety of skills involved in the craft of producing a beautiful monochrome image. All images are shot using medium format, either a Hasselblad 500CM or a Mamiya 7, or sometimes a Canon EOS100 35mm camera. Every image is then hand-printed in my own darkroom.

As you will see, I photograph a wide variety of subjects but all of the images share an intention to reveal the essential shapes, textures and tones which make that subject individual.

“Thisness”: the discrete characteristics of an object which make it individual.

Thank you for taking the time to view this collection of images. I hope you enjoy them.
